Nice Premiere: You have created an album after a long absence…
Jeanne Mas: Only absent since my last Casino de Paris in January 2005.
NP: What prompted you to come back?
JM: This new album, The Missing Flowers.
NP: Why an album in English?
JM: I live in Los Angeles. A nod to this city that I really love.
NP: Its release is very discreet… It seems like it’s meant for insiders. Why is that?
JM: It’s just the beginning.
NP: Electro rhythms, even new wave… Why the change of style?
JM: Why not? An artist doesn’t necessarily want to do the same song all their life. Changing is staying alive.
NP: The music video for the lead song is provocative. A bride is about to be loved. What is the message?
JM: This clip is a reflection on marriage.
NP: Why did you leave France and especially disappear from the music scene?
JM: Because life is unique and you do not have the right to stall while waiting for something good to happen. You have to provoke chance. Since I left, I’ve been missed.
NP: What inspires you in contemporary music?
JM: Actually, I only listen to Mozart.
NP: What reaction do you expect from your fans?
JM: Whatever they want to give me.
NP: Who has been the most influential person in your life? Do you have a “muse”?
JM: There are several people who have helped me become the artist I am. Balavoine among others. Muse… I love that band.
NP: Can we talk about an artistic commitment concerning your work?
JM: Not at all. I have fun working and I just hope to please people who listen to me.
NP: Which song represents you the most?
JM: A tune from Argentina.
NP: What state of mind are you in when you create today?
JM: Like a free artist.
NP: What do you think of the new French scene? Is there any performer who inspires you?
JM: I don’t really know what’s happening in France anymore.
NP: What do you expect from music?
JM: It is my second reason for living. The first being my children.
