Earth Overshoot Day occurred yesterday, Thursday, July 28, 2022. In other words, we have consumed in a few months all the resources that the planet can produce in a year.
In a context marked by extreme climatic phenomena (droughts, heatwaves, forest fires). If the agricultural and food systems suffer the consequences of climate change and biodiversity collapse, the current model is also one of the main culprits of resource overexploitation and significantly contributes to this overshoot.
During the “overshoot days,” humanity consumes resources that the planet cannot reproduce. In 2022, it takes 209 days to exhaust the resources renewed within the year. The 156 days before December 31 are therefore “on credit.”
This comparison highlights that our current footprint (resource consumption) is far greater than our biocapacity (ability to regenerate resources), which increases our debt each year.
Each year, this day comes earlier: in 1970, this day fell on December 29.
