June 21: “Make Music, Music Festival”

Latest News

The Fรชte de la Musique was born in 1982 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture led by Jack Lang. The choice to celebrate music on June 21 is not a coincidence: this day is the summer solstice (i.e., the shortest night of the year) and it echoes the ancient pagan feast of Saint John.

The slogan for the Fรชte de la Musique was coined in 1983: “Make Music, Fรชte de la Musique.”

This phrase says it all and this day became an opportunity for professionals, as well as amateurs, to give free concerts (especially outdoors) in all cities of France and in all possible musical genres.

The event has experienced growing success year after year until it has become a must-attend event today. Its success has crossed French borders and has spread widely in Europe and gradually in other countries around the world.

Today, about 130 countries and over 340 cities worldwide celebrate the Fรชte de la Musique.
