The Nice Opera has been presenting a new opera since September 29th, co-produced with the Opéra-Comique, the Opéra National du Rhin, and the Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur.
This opera immerses you in the settings of a story about impossible love with sweet exotic melodies. Gérald is an officer in the British army. He has a chance encounter with a young Hindu woman, Lakmé. They quickly fall in love. However, this love is impossible. The girl’s father, the stern Brahmin Nilakantha, fiercely opposes this relationship. This opera is inspired by a novel by Pierre Loti, Rarahu, a Polynesian Idyll. The French composer, Léo Delibes, composed for this story one of the most enchanting and famous scores of the entire French 19th century. Indeed, the captivating “Flower Duet” is a piece that transports you to distant lands…
The opera will be performed by Kathryn Lewek and Thomas Bettinger. It is conducted by Jacques Lacombes, one of the greatest specialists in French opera. Furthermore, this new staging is the work of Laurent Pelly in co-production with the Opéra-Comique and the Opéra National du Rhin. The Nice Opera offers three performances: September 29th at 8 PM, October 1st at 3 PM, and October 3rd at 8 PM. Finally, the show is in French, with surtitles in French and English.
