Launch of a fundraising campaign for a “Chausson” coach in Nice

A true icon of the 1960s, the Chausson coach is undergoing an expensive restoration requiring several thousand euros. Thus, the Alpes-Maritimes delegation of the Heritage Foundation is supporting a team of enthusiasts from the Tram and Bus of the Cรดte dโ€™Azur association in the project: zoom.ย

It’s an open secret that old vehicles are among the most robust. Some would say indestructible. The Chausson coaches are no exception, having truly marked the urban landscape in France between the 1950s and 1980s. Having made their mark in Nice and more broadly along the Cรดte dโ€™Azur, the model ASH 522A can be considered emblematic of the lines that served the coast at that time. So many memoriesโ€ฆ

The youngest among us have probably never heard of it. Not surprising for a vehicle from the post-war era. It has 46 seats and features a SOMUA 6-cylinder 150 horsepower engine. It operated from July 1961 until 1982, offering over twenty years of loyal and valiant service. This coach then passed through the hands of three different owners, and it took 38 years before the Tram & Bus of the Cรดte dโ€™Azur association acquired it. Even today, the vehicle continues to wind its way along the roads during occasional events for the public’s delight.

Following its renovation, the coach will be used for themed outings and exhibitions for enthusiasts of vintage vehicles, thanks to the regional development of the Tram & Bus of the Cรดte dโ€™Azur association. It will also be offered for film and TV series shoots, which have already utilized several vehicles from the association’s collection.

It was precisely in 2020 that the association acquired this Chausson coach, before undertaking mechanical work since then. More significant interventions are required on the exterior. Rust marks compromise the roof’s waterproofing, and the onset of corrosion causes blisters on the external paint. Therefore, prompt action is needed before these damages perforate the panels. The restoration costs are estimated at around โ‚ฌ27,000, with the fundraising goal set at โ‚ฌ14,000.

Donors can contribute to the fundraiser on the page www.fondation-patrimoine.org/les-projets/86257. Note that all donations are eligible for a tax receipt.
