The 35th “Régates Royales Trophée Panerai” take over the Bay of Cannes from September 21st to September 29th, 2013. Historic boats and boats listed as French heritage items compete in real races.

These 35th “Régates Royales,” authentic maritime races, set sail this Saturday. The competitors navigate between Cannes and the Lérins Islands without any automatic guiding instruments. Neither GPS nor modern devices are allowed to steer the boats.

A mythical and traditional race, sailors come from all over the world. Eighteen nationalities participate in these “Régates Royales.” A total of 163 boats, including classic yachts, sharks, and other dragons (small vessels), will sail offshore. The oldest boat competing dates back to 1896, and some are over 80 years old. Jacques Flori, president of the Yacht Club of Cannes, confirms: “This maritime race has an international reputation, its renown makes it authentic.”

Aside from the race, spectators can access the “Régates Royales” village where various activities occur, including “accrovoile” sailing initiation, and an oyster bar is available for spectators. Gérard Pascalini, a member of the Yacht Club (Cannes), specifies: “Numerous activities will enchant the Régates Royales to engage the interest of spectators.”

The partners and sponsors fund the “Régates Royales,” including BMW and the Panerai company. Mauritius also contributes to the financing of the event. The Cannes municipality also provides significant financial aid. The total cost of organizing the “Régates Royales Trophée Panerai” exceeds one million euros.
