jpg_jpg_Nice_Port_Stoa_Cocopn_23-2.jpgOn Friday, October 2, as part of the urban renewal of the Port of Nice, the launch of the redevelopment work on Place Guynemer, the Lunel, Papacino, and Deux Emmanuel quays will take place.

This first phase of work aims to requalify the roadways and regulate traffic, open the space to “soft” modes (pedestrians and cyclists) by extending the coastal bike path, and redevelop the public space (widening and beautifying sidewalks and terraces).

This work is the result of two public consultations “Urban Renewal of the Port” and “Redevelopment of Public Spaces Around the Port of Nice” organized by the two project managers – the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes and the City of Nice – in September-October 2008 (85% of respondents were residents of Nice, 50% were neighbors of the port. 80% of requests specifically concerned aesthetics, connection with the city, hospitality, lighting, etc.).

This is a strict redevelopment of existing structures, without extension or modification of fundamental structures.
Thus, the upper western roadways (Place Guynemer, Quais Lunel and Papacino) and the upper eastern roadway (Quai des Deux Emmanuel) will gradually shape the new face of the Port of Nice.

Place Guynemer is the western entrance to the Port of Nice. The intersection at Place Guynemer will be modified: traffic will “shift” to the facade side to create a wide, open space on the port for pedestrians and cyclists. A traffic light junction will be installed to secure road exchanges between Quai Lunel and Rue de Forest. The landscaped island will be expanded and the pine trees preserved.

Quai Lunel: Both lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained with urban characteristics to reduce speed. The bidirectional bike path will be extended.

Quai Papacino: Reducing the number of lanes to ensure safety and traffic coherence. Creation of a bidirectional bike path, and redistribution of space.

Quai des Deux Emmanuel: Maintaining two lanes of traffic with urban characteristics to calm the area, and widening of sidewalks.

The work will be carried out in 3 phases, starting October 5, 2009, with attention to minimizing disruptions for users and residents of the neighborhood.

The total cost of the first phase of the work amounts to 7.8 million euros.

Let us remember that the authorities involved in the development of the port will devote 150 million euros to the entire project.

Once this first phase of work is completed, residents will be able to enjoy new developments in complete safety and comfort, which are perfectly in line with the wishes expressed by the population and taken up by the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes and the City of Nice.
