Once again, abstention was the most notable feature in this Nice election, which ultimately interested only 21.28% of the voters from the 6th canton of Nice. Of these, 2047 votes went to the municipal majority in favor of Lauriano Azinheirinha, against 1397 votes for his opponent, Xavier Garcia. A score closer to the reality on the ground than predicted by the forecasts after Xavier Garcia’s 15.38% in the first round. An unsurprising election that sees another canton joining the other strongholds of a local UMP, demonstrating once again that it is well-rooted in the local political tradition.

Xavier Garcia, the unsuccessful candidate in this election, reacted after the announcement and wished to “congratulate Lauriano Azinheirinha on his victory. The debate was of high quality throughout this campaign, and everyone had the opportunity to defend their ideas.” He nonetheless expressed being “disappointed because I am in politics to win, but in a very difficult national context for the left and the Socialist Party, facing an all-powerful system in this city, I brought together the entire left and even beyond. We showed with Anne-Julie Clary that the PS and the left are still standing and constitute the real alternative. We did not just oppose; we proposed a local project that meets the needs of the residents.”

Nice Premium will soon offer you an exclusive interview with the new general councilor, who will reflect on his election, his projects, and the first hours of his new mandate.
