This Thursday, June 18th, the foundation stone for the future extension of the St-Jean d’Angély campus was laid at the corner of the Turin road and François Mitterrand avenue. A project in line with the city’s political commitment to education and higher learning, the housing is expected to be delivered for the 2016 university start, and all services are expected to be operational by late 2016-early 2017.
This new university hub will include nearly 200 student accommodations, the headquarters of the CROUS Nice-Toulon, 51 “Factory Club” apartments which will host foreign researchers and teacher-researchers as part of partnerships with university research laboratories, as well as the Student House, its central hub that will gather necessary information on services offered to students, and a multipurpose room that can accommodate up to 800 people.
A new structure that will enhance the neighborhood with the activity and life it will create, an area that has been constantly evolving over the years as evidenced by the construction of the Laure Icard hall, the extension of the tram line, or other projects in progress.
It will be named the “Olivier Chesneau” Student House in honor of this eminent French astronomer, who lived in the Nice region. His children were notably present at the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
“Nice is the City of life, the best way to illustrate it is to promote student life!”
Christian Estrosi, the deputy mayor of Nice, expressed his ambition with these words, set since 2008, to make Nice a major student city. The University of Nice Sophia Antipolis is indeed well known, even internationally, and enjoys numerous state recognitions, illustrated by labels and materialized by grants.
The “IDEX” (Initiative of Excellence) application file is about to come to fruition, the “Campus Excellence” label and the “Labex – Laboratories of Excellence” distinction have been obtained, the creation of an Eco-Campus and the development of Sophia-Tech are underway… So many measures illustrating the dynamism and innovation spirit that the city wants to instill in these neighborhoods by focusing on higher education and partnership with businesses.
Further developments of the greater Nice student park are to be expected as the city was recently selected in the “UCampus” campus animation project. This initiative involves 6 French cities, for a duration of 3 years, which were selected for their strong potential in study-related experiments.
