This weekend, Le Cannet is hosting a qualifying pool for the European Cup at the Maillan gymnasium, rue Georges Pompidou. It is the Euroligue 3 of wheelchair basketball. Five teams: Antwerp Players (BEL), CID Casa Murcia Getafe (ESP), SC Devedo (NED), Lille, and Le Cannet (FRA) will compete for a spot in the finals in Lodz, Poland. Wheelchair basketball is one of the most prominent disciplines in para sports. The rules are the same as in traditional basketball: five versus five, same court, and the same basket height. For three days, all teams will compete in a mini-championship. The winner will fly to Poland for a five-team final in April.
Presence of Stéphane Diagana
The event will begin Friday evening at 17:00 with the opening ceremony in the presence of Stéphane Diagana. The European record holder of the 400-meter hurdles, double world champion, and member of the World Anti-Doping Agency will be the patron of the competition. At 18:30, the first match featuring Le Cannet will kick off the ten matches of the weekend. Entrance costs €2 and is free for those under fifteen, with a pass for the three days also available for €5.
