Le Pilou: A typically Niçois sport

Latest News

Pilou was a very popular sport from the fifties to the seventies. Hitchcock immortalized it in his film To Catch a Thief. In recent years, it has once again been very popular among young people.

It is played in neighborhoods and on university campuses. Coaraze, a charming village in the hinterland, organized the “XXVIII World Championships,” which drew immense interest.

In winter, a Championship: the Liga du Pilo takes place every Sunday at the Piloudrome of Mont-Boron.

For your information, a piece of coin with a hole and a bit of plastic bag make a shuttlecock, called a “pilou” (pilo in classic Niçois). It is juggled with the feet, head, and body. Hands are strictly prohibited except for serving. The goal is to make the pilou land in the opponent’s court in one of the two circles drawn on the ground!

Participants (men, women, children, seniors, etc.) easily gain dexterity and agility during the sessions while improving their cardio. Pieces and the rules of the sport are distributed free of charge to allow training at home!

An optional Niçois picnic brought by each participant is shared after the training on the beach; a unique opportunity to meet real Niçois, passionate about sharing their perspective on their beautiful city and its heritage.
