This Thursday, January 4, 2024, a ViVA! citizen gathering was held under the mayor’s office alongside deputy Franรงois Piquemal regarding the SRU law.

Deputy Franรงois Piquemal would like a sanction to be imposed on mayors who do not comply with the SRU law. Indeed, the SRU law, Solidarity and Urban Renewal, requires municipalities to have 25% social housing. Unfortunately, some mayors flout this law, which was implemented in 2000.

The azure capital is a territory with high inequalities, with a poverty rate of 21%, higher than the national average of 14.5%. Those affected are mainly young people, tenants, and single-parent families.

In 2023, 78,000 people living in the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis are below the poverty line, which is about one in five people. This fact is noted by the cost of living, which increased by 12% in 2023.

The purpose of this gathering is to remind that a modest family can have the opportunity to access decent housing. It is noteworthy that in 2023, the city of Nice recorded 31,000 social housing applications, an increase of 13% in one year.

This demonstration highlights that the mayor of Nice is not complying with the SRU law, as the law requires municipalities to have 25% social housing. The city of Nice has only allocated 14.20%.

The ViVA! gathering denounces the fact that the municipality would forgo rent control under pressure from real estate developers. It recalls that 13% of vacant housing could be used and renovated for social housing. They also warn about the threat of secondary residences, which are booming in the city of Nice.
