Line 2: A Streetcar Named Desire?

Latest News

The anti-project collective deliberately decided by the municipal majority has publicly confirmed its intention to continue the legal challenge concerning the case of tramway line 2.

The refusal of the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes to overturn the decision of his predecessor, who had signed the Declaration of Public Interest, does not deter the promoters of the initiative from wanting to block the proceedings of the City Hall with an appeal to the administrative court, as well as to derail it from a political standpoint.

Meanwhile, Jean-August Icart, considered to be part of the municipal majority, was excluded from it, as announced in a statement by “Nice Ensemble,” the support list for Mayor Christian Estrosi.

“We are not ready to bankrupt ourselves or come under State supervision for a project, recklessly put under public investigation, unnecessarily buried, and… technically dangerous, even deadly,” says Christian Razeau, a member of this collective.

That’s what all Nice political formations opposing the tramway line 2 project, as planned by the resolution of the Deputy-Mayor of Nice, said last night. The main point of contention is the 3.2 km underground line (from the port to Grosso).

In the assembly, the presence of Mesdames Mari-Luz Nicaise-Hernandez, Frรฉdรฉrique Grรฉgoire-Concas, and Messieurs Victor, Mottard, Concas, Peyrat, Mari, Bouloudnine, as well as hydro-geologist Eric Gilli, administrative law professor Hubert Charles, and district committees with a “stake in the action” like the Victor Hugo Committee, the Place Garibaldi Committee and many participating personalities, all eager to do battle in court, was noted to safeguard the city’s finances and heritage, avoiding a “1 billion-euro wreck” as was unanimously stated.

The rail battle promises to be lively in Nice in the coming weeks!
