In 1969, Magma was founded by Christian Vander. Bands and trends come and go, but some remain and endure. Far beyond a simple musical spasm and fashion effect, Magma asserted itself from 1970 with its music freed from connivances and clichés, a music that is violent, virtuosic, and unequaled.
Christian Vander, drummer and founder of the band, played his first rhythms under the direction of Elvin Jones, and he grew up as one of the memories of jazz from the 50s/60s, with his own vision.
With Magma, he avoids the easy path and quickly distinguishes himself from his contemporaries. A rigorous musician, fiercely demanding, he hypnotizes as soon as he plays or sings, and opens up the paths to a powerful and relentless polyrhythm. The musicians who surrounded him then are all today big names in contemporary music. They are: Jannick Top, Claude Engel, Bernard Paganotti, Didier Lockwood, and the late Michel Graillier… Like Miles Davis, Vander remains a great “sharpener” of talents.
