The bottom of the Port of Nice is composed of sand, and the maneuvering of ships in the commercial basins causes turbulence that leads to the displacement of sediments.
Over time, “bumps” appear on the water bed, which restrict maneuvering and risk causing some ships to run aground.
The Nice Côte d’Azur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the concession holder of the Port of Nice, carries out annual maintenance work (known as leveling) to maintain the depth of the basin, which involves spreading the sediments from these “bumps” into the “hollows” of the port.
In this context and in accordance with the water law, samples have been taken to assess the sediment quality. The analyses reveal that the sediments are of good quality.
They therefore do not pose a pollution risk.
The site installation began on February 7, with work starting today, Monday, February 14, 2011.
The water quality in the discharge area will be measured to monitor the project’s environmental impact.
