March 8: Women’s rights in Nice, where do we stand?

This question was answered at the conference held on the eve of D-Day at the CUM yesterday in the presence of elected officials and representatives of the associative world. We could just remember the basic assertion that characterized the interventions: “It is in the best interest of our society that women and men have exactly the same rights.”

It was not until 1945 that the law granted each French woman the right to vote, thanks to General de Gaulle. Today, 71 years after full civic recognition, many other advancements have been made towards true equality.

She also symbolizes the march of freedom in a famous painting by Delacroix.

In Nice, it is its mayor Christian Estrosi who seeks to be the champion of women’s rights: “Regarding these rights to defend, we have a particular duty in Nice, not only because of Catherine Ségurane and so many other figures who have marked our history. It was a native of Nice, René Cassin, who paved the way by drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights voted by the United Nations in 1948.”

Christian Estrosi recalled that Nice and the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur have engaged in this fight for real equality in all sectors of social and professional life and that the capital of the Azure region was one of the first cities to sign the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life.

In this context, an action plan has been put in place until 2020 with specific and coordinated objectives, all aimed at establishing de facto equality.

In terms of achievements, the coordinated efforts of the City of Nice, the Communal Center for Social Action, and the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur are bearing fruit in various sectors such as professional equality, the fight against discrimination between women and men at work, against violence and sexist stereotypes, and against precariousness.

Christian Estrosi’s conclusion shows all his determination: “We are engaged in a long-term action so that equality is no longer just a simple declaration, a simple intention, but a daily reality.”
