Once upon a time, there was a 26-year-old young woman named Pomme… oops, no, that’s her online nickname… Let’s start again: her name was Mรฉlanie and she lived somewhere in Poitou-Charente. She works as a waitress-pump attendant at the Martinez.
According to the film’s synopsis, *”Mรฉlanie (Marilou Berry) is an overly nice girl. Her mother, her boss, her friends, her neighbor, and even her neighbor’s dog know it… and take advantage of it. One day, after a final humiliation, Mรฉlanie decides to change. From now on, she will take revenge on everyone who made her life miserable. Except that learning to be mean doesn’t happen in two days, especially when you’ve been a kind girl all your life…”*
“When you’re too nice for too long, you become invisible to others. No one hears you, no one listens because you always accept everything! And the day you decide to ask for something, it’s too late! You might even apologize to make people hear you. Haven’t you ever noticed? People who complain, who are never satisfied, and who say it loud and clear, they are the ones who get listened to!” relates Marilou Berry.
“So STOP! STOP being too nice! Because being too nice can even be a flaw! You have to find the right balance,” says Marilou. Mรฉlanie has reached her limit, and today her cup runs over, so she decides to take her revenge by becoming mean. “And thatโs not a given! Because it’s much easier to be nice than to be mean,” observes Marilou. “But Mรฉlanie will do everything to prove she can be mean. It’s a vengeance.”
Mรฉlanie is going to take revenge on those who use her, including:
Richard Martinez, her charming boss,
Aurore, her blonde friend, the leader of the gang,
Blandide, her red-headed friend, the number two, the lieutenant, a young “Cruella,” a porcelain fan,
Jessica, the brunette, the not-too-bright friend who mixes up Mozart and Jordie, not very confident, and who loves appearing on TV game shows.
Will Mรฉlanie succeed? “In any case, I loved playing this role, a character I want to keep alive after the film because I’ll have a hard time parting with her; in fact, I dedicated a MySpace page to her [https://www.myspace.com/vilainelefilm](https://www.myspace.com/vilainelefilm). Mรฉlanie is like me. This character is very caricatured and, at the same time, it’s me!” Marilou responds with a smile, her digital camera turned “ON.”
“VILAINE” is a comedy. Its message? Everyone has the right to happiness, whether small, big, fat, skinny, with acne or not, whether nice or mean… A comedy, no, *the* comedy of the end of the year to be watched without moderation. Let the laughter begin!
Before ending this modern fairy tale with music not to be overlooked, Marilou: what are the three ingredients to become mean?
“Suze… a megaphone… a baseball bat and going to the animal shelter and saying NO in front of a kitten or a puppy giving us the cute eyes,” replies Marilou.
And to be nice? “Go with the flow,” Marilou responds.
One last question, any advice for our internet users? “Be Naughty!!” she says with a smile.
“Vilaine,” the zany comedy by Jean-Patrick Benes and Allan Mauduit, starring Marilou Berry, Frรฉdรฉrique Bel, Chantal Lauby, Pierre-Franรงois Martin-Laval, will be showing in French theaters starting Wednesday, November 12.
