The Socialist Party federation of Alpes-Maritimes received a visit from Marc COATANEA, the national secretary for social issues. Together with Patrick ALLEMAND, the two men held a press conference on marriage for all, its implementation modalities, and its consequences.
Marc Coatanea travels the country to reaffirm the PS’s intention to uphold the marriage for all law and those that will follow. “This is an important aspect for Franรงois Hollande. The PS is determined to see this reform through to the end,” declared the national secretary for social issues.
Seeing it through means carrying out this reform on all fronts and, therefore, ending discrimination. Once the law is implemented, some discontent may persist. Indeed, “it’s not because a law is enacted that social mores will suddenly change. But it’s a start,” according to Mr. Coatanea. Marriage for all is a considerable social advancement that the French had already validated during Franรงois Hollande’s campaign (the law being one of his 60 propositions).
Fighting homophobia is a priority for the party. To this end, an information campaign is unfolding across the country, and gradually the misconceptions are dissipating, especially among the younger generation, who are sensitive to their parents’ ideas. In schools, some debates aim to inform.
For the PS, the question is no longer whether to implement the law but to explain why it is necessary and constitutes a significant advancement.
This conference was also an opportunity to break some false truths. Repeatedly, politicians like Jean Franรงois Copรฉ exclaimed, “there will no longer be a father and mother” and spoke of dangers to children. The fact is that same-sex parents (it cannot be stressed enough) have been a reality long before Franรงois Hollande proposed this law during his campaign. “It’s not because a child has a father and a mother that there is any guarantee concerning their future, so why couldn’t same-sex parents do just as well?”
Finally, in a second phase, it will no longer be marriage but adoption for homosexual parents that will be at the center of the debate.
