During the Metropolitan Council on March 11, 2024, numerous resolutions were made. Deliberations animated the discussions, marking a significant turning point in the environmental and social policy of Nice Metropolis.
Alarming figures
In light of the alarming prospect of doubling plastic pollution by 2030, the Metropolis has decided to update its action plan by unanimously adopting a new zero-plastic strategy. The alarming figures were recalled: every second, about 7 kilograms of plastic are dumped into the Mediterranean. Moreover, every year, no less than 110 tons of cigarette butts pollute the streets of Nice. Despite the efforts of cleaning teams who manage to collect 27 tons, a significant portion of this waste unfortunately ends up in the sea, exacerbating the degradation of our marine ecosystem.
However, discussions were not limited to environmental issues. The elected officials also made decisive commitments for the future of their neighborhoods. Among these, the control of the drug market in certain sensitive areas of the city was announced. The authorities also mentioned a reclamation of these neighborhoods. An increased support for the production of social housing was also promised.
With 50,400 households in Alpes-Maritimes affected by the need for social housing, the City is mobilizing to address this social urgency. To this end, the City is implementing additional aids to facilitate seniors’ access to housing suited to their needs. Assistance will also be provided for single-parent households, for example. The Metropolis is committed to enforcing the SRU law, aimed at restoring a social balance and resolving the shortage of social housing.
Innovative initiative
A revolutionary initiative was unveiled: the city guarantees loans for developers building intermediate housing. This measure, the first of its kind, illustrates the city of Nice’s resolute commitment to diversify its housing supply and meet the varied needs of its population.
By taking these bold measures, the city affirms its determination to combine preservation of the environment and revitalization of its neighborhoods. It is therefore committed to a future that is greener and to building stronger communities.
