Metzger Exhibition at Mamac: Reactivation of the Work South Bank Demonstration

Latest News

From February 11 to May 14, the MAMAC is dedicating a major exhibition to Gustav Metzger, an artist with an international career, whose influence has continued to grow in recent years.

This Tuesday, the 7th, at 3 p.m., MAMAC is publicly recreating South Bank Demonstration (1961/2017) for the exhibition dedicated to the artist. This work by Metzger was first created in June 1961 when he organized a large public demonstration of acid painting.

Equipped with a gas mask, gloves, and a sprayer, the artist sprays three nylon canvases of different colors with hydrochloric acid and gradually enters the structure. The artwork simultaneously self-generates and self-destructs, gradually revealing the landscape of London and the Thames.

In this action, Metzger deliberately uses equipment that, beyond protecting him, immediately alludes to a sense of danger and toxicity.

The piece will be featured throughout the MAMAC exhibition.
