Migrants: Amnesty International sounds the alarm

Latest News

The Council of Ministers will examine a draft law concerning the regulation of immigration.

Until now, the executive has preferred to bury its head in the sand, trying to limit the influx of migrants coming from Italy by applying the distinction between those who come from war-torn countries (and are therefore entitled to asylum) and economic migrants.

A policy that is inapplicable in practice.

We will see if, in light of the emergency situation, the new government will have the capacity to take responsibility for a comprehensive, and at least medium-term, plan.

“If the second half of 2017 is like the first and no emergency measures are taken, 2017 is on track to become the deadliest year for the world’s deadliest migration route,” warns John Dalhuisen, Director for Europe at Amnesty International.

More than 2,200 migrants who attempted to cross the Mediterranean Sea have died in the first six months of the year, according to a report published by Amnesty International. This corresponds to a death rate of 2.7% compared to the total number of migrants recorded.

In 2016, considered the deadliest year, 4,581 deaths were recorded, with a mortality rate of 2.5%. Based on this, the mortality rate in 2017 could therefore be higher than in 2016, or at least just as high, explains Amnesty International.
