Unofficial IOM data indicates that 937,241 migrants and refugees arrived by Greek sea borders between January 1, 2015, and February 17, 2016, suggesting that this number will likely reach one million by mid-March.
This week, IOM controllers in the Eastern Mediterranean reported that bad weather had contributed to a decrease in the number of arrivals in Greece from Turkey, even though about 3,350 migrants arrived on Wednesday, February 17, after several days of a slow crossing.
Arrivals in Greece since January 1, 2016: 83,591. 321 have been recorded as deceased.
The situation in Italy is 7,165 arrivals, and 90 deceased.
In the two previous years, the situation was as follows:
Greece: 34,442 in 2014, 853,650 in 2015
Italy: 170,100 in 2014, 153,842 in 2015
Data on migrant deaths are collected by IOM GMDAC. All figures are minimum estimates.
Arrival estimates are based on data collected by respective governments and IOM field offices.
