Moment of silence in Nice for Charlie Hebdo

Latest News

The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, accompanied by all the elected officials, staff from the main city hall, and municipal police officers observed a minute of silence this Thursday at noon in tribute to the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack.

It is noon on the forecourt of the main city hall. Hundreds of people have gathered in silence.

Declared a national day of mourning by President Franรงois Hollande, Nice, like the whole of France, remained silent for one minute. During this minute, everyone was able, with emotion, to pay tribute to the 12 people who died in the attack at the Charlie Hebdo headquarters on Wednesday.

Two large posters were displayed on the faรงade of the city hall, one featuring the famous phrase “Je suis Charlie” and the six photos of the satirical newspaper’s cartoonists and columnists who died yesterday, and the other displaying the names of the other victims.

“We must not fuel hysteria.” Deeply moved, Christian Estrosi expressed his incomprehension of such acts. “The entire republic has been affected. It is now up to us to prove that no one can undermine our freedom.”

“Nice has already thwarted attacks, last year, during the carnival. I am therefore calling on the government to implement the Vigipirate plan at the same level in all major cities of France.”

He does not wish, however, to fuel hysteria. “We will not give in to this threat. The major events in Nice will take place; there must continue to be a life in society in Nice.”
