At the end of 1887, Mahler discovered Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn), a famous anthology of “old German folk songs” that was very successful in romantic Germany. He devoted nearly all of his vocal production to it, 24 lieder, 3 of which would become movements of symphonies. The small scenes of the Wunderhorn are of great variety, ranging from nursery rhymes to legends, from fables to fantastic tales, from skits played between lovers to ballads.
