Mortality at its highest in 70 years in France

The mortality rate increased by 9% in 2020, as revealed by Insee on Monday. This situation is almost entirely the responsibility of Covid. It costs the French a little more than six months of life expectancy at birth.

The setback is considerable, exactly seven decades. With nearly 669,000 deaths from all causes in 2020, which is 9% more than in 2019, mortality in France has never been so high in 70 years, revealed Insee.

A record rate driven primarily by the increase in deaths of elderly people who fell victim to Covid.

As a consequence of this almost general wave of excess mortality, “the pandemic reduces life expectancy by 0.5 years for women and 0.6 years for men,” Insee points out.

For the record: The Alpes-Maritimes has 1,089,000 inhabitants.
