Municipal elections 2020: the announcement of the future demolition of the Acropolis and the TNN exacerbates the debate and fuels controversy

The announcements made by Christian Estrosi during his campaign rally yesterday morning at the Palais Acropolis provoked an immediate reaction from his competitors who, considering the unfavorable polls, must race against the favorite by trying, through their criticisms, to put him at odds with the voters.

Particularly targeted are those concerning the planned demolition of the TNN – relocated to the new spaces of the former Franciscans’ church – and the Palais Acropolis, which, after the construction of the new Exhibition and Congress Palace to the west, would become redundant.

Philippe Vardon and Benoît Kandel each announce that, if elected Mayor, they will scrap the two projects.

Philippe Vardon (RN) titled his statement: Destroy Acropolis to build his “Estropolis”? The dangerous drift of Christian Estrosi*

Let us nonetheless remind that the Palais Acropolis is the central element of our city’s event attractiveness policy. Moreover, it was from Acropolis that Christian Estrosi spoke this morning… If renovations, improvements, are needed, there are thousands of other solutions than destruction.

[…] Beyond this aspect, I cannot subscribe to a vision that consists of gradually removing all economic and cultural activities from the city center, which cannot be just a place for strolling.

[…] This morning’s announcement shocks me, as it has shocked many inhabitants of Nice, and crudely illustrates a true drift. Christian Estrosi no longer wants to be a builder-mayor but now a demiurge-mayor: transforming the city to his taste, at his will. He shows very little humility here in the face of our city’s millennial history, and very little respect – also – towards those who preceded him, notably in the mayoral seat of Nice. Christian Estrosi acts as if he wants to erase every trace of Nice before 2008, to build an “Estropolis.”

Benoît Kandel (CNIP and Independent): I thought it was fake news when I read that Christian Estrosi proposed razing Acropolis and the TNN! But no, it’s indeed in his electoral program!

He thus wants to destroy buildings constructed only about thirty years ago and recently renovated at great expense by taxpayers in 2011 with the help of renowned architects like Jean-Michel Wilmotte… to plant grass and a few trees. Meanwhile, he “concretes over” the rich agricultural lands of the Var plain. Where is the logic?

[…] The TNN and Acropolis are indispensable tools for culture, business tourism, and supporting our local economy. The Acropolis complex was awarded in 2015 as the best international center (International Association of Professional Congress). All these investments made by the people of Nice reduced to dust… To gain a few hundred meters of garden…
