Municipal elections in Nice: a left neither united nor renewed

Latest News

For over a year, I have been making every effort (along with others) to ensure that the people of Nice, including those in the metropolitan area who do not identify with the local right and far-right, are represented in the municipal elections by a team and a project. At the beginning of September, I called for the gathering of political forces capable of structuring this hope. This call for unity was also intended as a desire for renewal. It was rather well-received by voters, as evidenced by the latest survey published in Nice-Matin, but also, initially, by the political parties themselves.

Unfortunately, even more than the formation of a list to the left of the left, the decision by EELV to create a list with the controversial AEI, probably led by its national leader Jean-Marc Governatori, seems to spell the end of this hope for unity.

Faced with a mayor whose recordโ€”whether pleasing or notโ€”is endorsed by four out of five people in Nice, and a far-right (though lagging in the aforementioned survey) that will regain strength and vigor, we are heading straight towards the scenario of the regional election and the disappearance of any representation for the left in Nice.

Certainly, the election is in five months, and surprises may still occur. But while it is not yet too late, it is already quite late.
