Municipal Elections in Nice: The Die is Cast, Is Everything at a Standstill for the Left?

Latest News

It has been known since the end of last week that there will be no primaries in the 5th largest city in France, where Patrick Allemand will be the Socialist candidate for the upcoming 2014 municipal elections. This news has been very poorly received by other left-leaning factions in the region, as well as by some Socialist officials. And now?

primaires_nice-5.jpg Patrick Mottard, Jean-Christophe Picard, and Marc Concas had hoped for this trial run in the form of a vote to democratically choose the next candidate for the united left in the capital of the French Riviera. It will be different, and now these three politicians from Nice will have to make choices, although it is already known that the President of PRG 06, Jean-Christophe Picard, will not join Patrick Allemand’s team.

As for Marc Concas and Patrick Mottard, the suspense remains intact, and it is not excluded, far from it, that a candidacy might unite the two men and Jean-Christophe Picard within a common list without a specific label. It remains to be seen who would lead itโ€ฆ

But beyond the rapprochement of these so-called left-leaning sensibilities, it is also possible that other elected officials, located (perhaps?) a bit more to the right, might join this movement with a strong Nice influence. One can imagine Olivier Bettati, Jean-Auguste Icart, or Marouane Bouloudhnine who, isolated, would have no chance of unsettling their arch-enemy Christian Estrosi, but who, united, could represent a new force in the Nice political landscape. But, here too, agreeing on a common project is not so simple!

Without a doubt, the 2014 municipal elections are going to be of a very, very high level in the capital of the French Rivieraโ€ฆ
