“This list is one of renewal, as it includes 50% new personalities. It is also a list of rejuvenation, with 25% of running mates under the age of 40.”
These are the introductory words of Christian Estrosi (in “pre-Olympic” form, and besides, in the corridors of the Vatican, do they not say “power wears out those who do not have it?”) during the presentation of candidates for the March 2020 municipal elections for which he is the big favorite—he is credited with nearly 50% in the first round by an IFOP poll—for the “triplet,” after successes in 2008 and 2014.
With the comfort of such a forecast, the composition of the list was not an ordinary exercise: who said people like to jump on the winner’s bandwagon?
In any case, the candidate—who wants to remain the incumbent mayor until the last day, … coronavirus obliges—strongly claimed the autonomous stamp of “his” list: “I have neither accepted nor will I accept any interference even if I thank the parties that declared their support for me, LR, UDI, MoDem …”.
As for LREM, assumed to provide under-the-table support (20 days before the first round, the Electoral Commission has still not expressed itself on the Nice case … see what that means?), Christian Estrosi got away with an acrobatic move worthy of a diplomat: “I have good relations with the President of the Republic, who has shown attentiveness to the issues of our city and care during the arbitrations. After that, I consider that political debate does not have its place in the municipal debate.”
A look at the list presented by the local demiurge (“I do not want to be the mayor of Nice, but the mayor of the people of Nice”)?
Firstly, a significant presence of representatives from civil society, the associative world, and liberal professions (a good bunch of doctors and lawyers … skills will not be lacking!), the appreciable profile of some young clerks, carriers of an interesting curriculum in perspective.
Then, a good mix between competence and loyalty for a team that, although in the majority, will have to face a valiant opposition: the RN group seems not to have lost the traditional frontline aggressiveness and the ecologists, inhabited by the feeling of being the sole bearers of the truth, will be tough.
Individually, how can we not emphasize the presence of Anthony Borré, who leaves his role as “advisor to the prince” to enter the arena and play his own part? He will be an influential strategist, and with Christian Estrosi—lord of the place—and Philippe Pradal—the municipal great treasurer—the third component of the triangle of power.
And again, how can we not appreciate some fine “captures,” in the first place, out of courtesy, Mrs. Monique Bailet, an experienced senior administrative executive and perfect local expert; then the environmentalist Dr. Chemla, a major figure in the world of economy and business Jacques Richier, an excellence in education Dean Xavier Latour, the representative of the future generation, the talented Greg Moretti.
Some legitimate questions arise due to the absence of figures from the term that is coming to an end, such as Professor Véronique Paquis who managed the environment chapters and university relations well, Professor Olivier Guerin who gave good impetus to health and well-being issues, sports manager Gilles Veissière who coordinated the issues of the local sports archipelago complex well. Time will tell whether this is due to a personal choice or a negative verdict, and why.
One remark deserves attention regarding the presence of two “heiresses,” Jennifer Salles and Aurore Asso. Each will have the arduous task of proving that their commitment responds to personal qualities rather than their surname.
Finally, how can we not be surprised to read the names of two long-time opponents, Marc Concas and Patrick Mottard, who have symbolically crossed the river to reach the other side? Poor them … they must already hear the bird names they are and will be showered with by their former friends.
But… What ideological is there in presiding over a call for tenders commission without partisan spirit and solely in respect of ethics? What is pejorative in offering one’s passion to an artistic cause?
