id.jpgTo say that Staff Benda Bilili is unlike anything known is an understatement.

It is one of the success stories of the international music scene: after leaving the streets of Kinshasa for the first time in 2009, Staff Benda Bilili has captivated the public and media with their first album and their initial European concerts.

The heart of the group consists of four mature singer-guitarists perched on spectacularly modified tricycles, sometimes sliding on the ground to dance, arms raised in joyful supplication. Their names are Ricky, Coco, Theo, and Roger.

Behind them, a youthful and entirely acoustic rhythm section. To top it off, there are performances by a young 17-year-old prodigy on a one-string electric lute that he invented and built himself out of a tin can.

Benda Bilili means “look beyond appearances,” literally “highlight what is in the shadows.” The strength, the delicacy, the astonishing beauty of their music.
