Listening to France Bleu Azur, we were charmed by a voice. No, no, don’t be mistaken—it’s neither a female nor a male radio host. This voice belongs to a singer from Cannes named Gaiya. Unusual name, isn’t it? After her first radio interview with Adrien Mangano, here she is on our canvas!
Nice-Premium: Hello Gaiya, where and how were you born?
Gaiya: Hello, I was born in Rosny-sous-Bois, one afternoon in October ’84, and how? By cesarean lol.
Nice-Premium: Here we are today, at the dawn of your musical big bang, how was the first musical note created?
Gaiya: First of all, I’ve been working with a friend for 10 years now, we always said we absolutely had to make my album… But I’ve never sought to make music like everyone else, I’m primarily interested in harmony, it must take me far before it’s finished… so it mainly starts behind a piano, we search for the notes that resonate with me, then I’m generally inspired to find the melody line, it’s often very quick because he and I almost listen to the same music…
Nice-Premium: Little by little, Gaiya followed her passion, creating her own songs and music along the way. What are your musical colors?
Gaiya: I’m very much into English rock, trip hop; in my playlist, you’ll find Coldplay, Sia, Portishead, Sade, Pink Floyd, U2, Lenny Kravitz, Bjork, etc… And so many more… I listen to everything except rap, R’n’B isn’t really my cup of tea…
Nice-Premium: French, certainly, but it’s not the language of Molière that makes you sing! Why?
Gaiya: I have a lot of trouble with the French language because it’s not always easy to put it to music, especially in the style I’ve chosen… I don’t think my songs would have the same impact in French, and I definitely don’t want to go into variety, which I totally respect but is really not for me… I’m also aiming at a broad audience, not just French… And then I love the English language… It’s a very sensual language…
Nice-Premium: What are the themes that tickle your pen?
Gaiya: So many! Mainly love! Like all girls, I think, and then music often helps purge the buried pains of the past… so generally, they aren’t happy songs, but there are a few! Like “I’m Feeling Good.” Then the themes I like to address are ecology, you’ll discover “Sorry So” soon which speaks about people who claim to care but do nothing to change the planet’s future… And lastly, there are themes about domestic violence, loneliness, many themes that speak to a lot of people.
Nice-Premium: It seems that “Gaiya is a complex being,” and she would even be a magician: “She turns love and hate into music”!!!! Is it true?
Gaiya: Let’s say that instead of becoming mean from suffering or letting my thirst for love fade away, I prefer to use all that to try to make beautiful songs. It’s a bit of a therapy!
Nice-Premium: Notes, music, lyrics, songs, and tomorrow an album?
Gaiya: Yes, we are in the process of finishing it… We decided at the beginning of the year to take our time to do it because I really want people to listen to it and feel there’s been real work involved. It’s also important to let some songs mature, set them aside, and rework them later… There’s also the video for “If You Love Me,” which we are going to shoot soon (by December) with the director Laurent Egoyan, who is an image fanatic! I think the spirit you’ll like!
Nice-Premium: An album, whose conception can apparently be followed on video?
Gaiya: Yes, we regularly try to post recording sessions on Facebook or Myspace. There will soon be a new preview of a song titled “She’s Your Way.”
Nice-Premium: An album with Gaiya as an author/composer/performer and…
Gaiya: Jean Marc Loucky, who is the sound engineer and arranger, then we mainly compose together. There’s Maurizio Petullo, the bassist, who has very “Red Hot Chili Peppers” influences. And the drummer, who recently joined our little team, is Bruno Desbiolles.
Nice-Premium: In search of the person who will change your musical future?
Gaiya: Yes!!!! Well, I’m looking for a distributor or a record label that would be seduced by my music, seduced by the journey it provided them, seduced enough to change my life, and I remain convinced that this person will cross my path.
Nice-Premium: Thank you lovely Gaiya, music is…
Gaiya: Vital! Magical!
So, now, all that’s left for you is to listen to her sing:
