During the City Council meeting held on October 7, new projects were adopted concerning education, health, ecology, culture, sports, and the social domain. New features related to the Nice carnival were also added.
Health
Studies will be conducted to establish two Multidisciplinary Health Centers and a Sports Health House, supported by the city of Nice. Details have not been disclosed.
Education
The city will fund the project “Nice 100% Culture at School,” which will bring culture to children. 4,700 students and 192 classes are involved, and 29 local artists will contribute. It is expected to take five years to reach 100% participation. The “Music for All” operation will encourage the practice of a musical instrument starting from first grade.
Cinema
Municipal councilor Henri Jean Servat presented a cultural project in partnership with the National Superior School Louis-Lumière and Amazon Prime Video. It involves an agreement to create a “mentorship program for feature film scriptwriting.” Amazon Prime fully funds the budget of 156,000 euros. This program will take place at the Victorine studios in Nice.
The RN abstained during the vote, causing misunderstanding from the mayor and significant tensions. The mayor claimed that the elected officials had no reason, and “did not know themselves” why they abstained. Philippe Vardon then retorted that they would explain if their microphones were on. This led to another dispute between the two politicians, which enlivened the council during lunchtime. The municipal, metropolitan, and regional councilor reproached Christian Estrosi for not respecting the spirit of the debate. The latter accused Mr. Vardon of being “violent.”
Sports
Subsidies and indirect aids will be allocated to various sports organizations. High-level athletes, licensed with Nice sports associations, will receive financial grants. Three associations are involved. Various organizations related to sports events will also benefit from these substantial subsidies and indirect aids.
Carnival
The organizational details for the 2022 Carnival edition were discussed. On this occasion, Mr. Vardon (RN) recalled the origins of the family and free carnival he knew during his childhood, which has now become paid unless for those fully costumed. (If you find a free costume, let us know!) The RN opposes the privatization of the carnival, taken out of the streets and from local residents’ reach in favor of tourists. A municipal councilor involved in this resolution argues that the famous barriers hiding the view of the floats are requested by the prefecture and the Ministry of the Interior to secure the perimeter.
Let’s move on to the celebrations.
Christian Estrosi announced that the opening of the next carnival would feature a “free full parade” for all locals. The opening and closing ceremonies will be free. He promises that residents will have more opportunities to participate than in previous years. The floats will be displayed outside and not returned to garages after each parade, allowing anyone to photograph them at that time.
That’s not all. The real novelty is an initiative from Graig Monetti. It’s a new carnival organized by students. We are eager to learn more, as the details are sparse.
Since two carnivals aren’t enough, the “Queernaval” organized by the LGBT community will return, taking place around Place Masséna.
