The orange heatwave alert was issued this Sunday, August 20th for the Alpes-Maritimes department. We expect temperatures between 33ยฐC and 34ยฐC, with a hotter perceived temperature due to humidity. The city hall is planning an entire organization to best assist the most vulnerable.
Jennifer Salles Barbosa, deputy mayor of Nice and delegate for solidarity, spoke today during the meeting between the city hall and our seniors from the EPHAD of Veterans. The purpose of this meeting was to remind the measures taken by the city in these new periods of intense heat.
“We must show solidarity”
Jennifer Salles Barbosa addressed the residents of the EPHAD. She notes that the premises are air-conditioned and misting fans and drinks are made available. These details demonstrate a real vigilance on the part of the teams in charge of dependents.
A resident adds humorously: “However, we are missing a nice swimming pool!” This comment prompts the deputy to point out that several activities are offered to the elderly: pastimes, walks during the coolest hours… the necessary measures to take maximum care of these elderly people.
“We have already experienced heatwave episodes like this one in July. We are ready, our teams are ready. And we are all here to remind you of the gestures to follow. But also, what we are implementing in our CCAS (Communal Centre for Social Action) establishments,” continues the deputy. We must show solidarity.“
On alert since June 1st
Since June 1st, the city of Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes department have been on alert because every year, the city and the department experience very large heatwaves. Indeed, this has been happening every summer for a few years now. “Now we are prepared, all our establishments are trained,” adds Jennifer Salles Barbosa.
She adds: “In our EPHAD, we are implementing the Blue Plan, which means we take care of the people in these establishments. We have enhanced vigilance regarding the most fragile people, especially during these heatwave periods. We also remind people of the important gestures for isolated residents who are registered in the CCAS files as very fragile. Today, we have about 2,500 registered people. The goal is to call them every two days to check in, and if they do not respond, we visit them to ensure everything is fine.“
Cool places made available in the city
For the homeless or dependent people, cool places are made available. They will be open during the day to offer access to permanently cool locations. These places include annex city halls, community areas, libraries. Social centers are part of these locations, notably those of Roquebiliรจre, lโAriane, or les Moulins.
