Latest News

Camille Muffat, a dazzling star of French sports, continues to shine in our memories. As the tenth anniversary of her passing approaches, NicePremium pays tribute to her.

Born in Nice in 1989, she quickly revealed an extraordinary talent in the swimming pools. Strong and disciplined, she climbed the ranks of swimming with unwavering determination. At the London Olympics in 2012, she reached the pinnacle, winning three medals: gold in the 400-meter freestyle, silver in the 200-meter freestyle, and bronze in the 4ร—200-meter freestyle relay. A rare achievement and a source of pride for France.

Her brilliant career earned her countless national and European titles. But beyond her performances, Camille Muffat was admired for her simplicity and discretion. Her tragic departure in a helicopter accident in Argentina in 2015 left a huge void in the hearts of her admirers. She still embodies self-surpassment and excellence today. A source of inspiration for future generations.

From a young age, she trained with the Nice club, under the regimen dictated by Fabrice Pellerin. Initially focused on breaststroke and medley, she eventually found her path in freestyle, a discipline where she excelled. In 2010, she shone at the French and European championships, alongside the legendary Laure Manaudou. Two years later, her talent exploded onto the world stage in London: by winning gold, she became the fourth French athlete to become an Olympic champion in swimming, after Jean Boiteux in 1952, Laure Manaudou in 2004, and Antibes’ Alain Bernard four years later. In London, she also added a silver and a bronze medal to her achievements.

Even more than her Olympic successes, Camille Muffat still holds several records today, such as the long course 400-meter freestyle record and the European record for the short course 800 meters. In 2013, having celebrated her 24th birthday, she surprised the swimming world by announcing her retirement to explore other horizons.

Sadly, in March 2015, during the filming of the show Dropped, the Nice native died in a tragic accident in Argentina. Her passing shook France, and many sports venues now bear her name in tribute. Forever, Camille Muffat remains a symbol of passion, courage, and humility, a role model for all who dare to dream big.
