The Alegria Solidarity Restaurant for Isolated Elderly People closes its doors on August 24th. Inaugurated last June and supported by the city of Nice, this project will return in October at a new location.
Dishes have been served at Alegria, 9 rue Alsace-Lorraine, throughout this summer. Since its inauguration on June 28th, the solidarity restaurant has allowed non-taxable and isolated seniors in the city to access a balanced meal at an unbeatable price. Three euros is the cost for a complete menu prepared by the central kitchen of Nice and served in conditions worthy of a classic restaurant.
This project supported by the municipality and the CCAS, in partnership with Malakoff Humanis, Hetis (Haute รcole du Travail et de l’Intervention Sociale) and the student federation โ FACE06 is set “in a context of inflation and the fight against the isolation of the elderly.” Thus, seniors were able to “benefit from an activity of social connection and preventive actions in a friendly place.”
Karaoke, balls, board games, these meal times were followed and preceded by various activities led by the city. Associations like La Semeuse, Plumarine, and the Association of Filipinos also got involved.
The Solidarity Restaurant Returns in October
2,000 menus were served during this summer experiment, from Monday to Friday. The municipality considers this significant first to have been a success. When presenting the project at the municipal council last June, Christian Estrosi, mayor of Nice, envisioned an initiative that would bring “a bit of well-being and joy of living in these socially very complicated times for some of our fellow citizens.”
So if the establishment closes this Thursday, August 24th, it is to return more sustainably in October. The city of Nice indicates that the solidarity restaurant will move this fall “to a new location nearby, so that throughout the year seniors can meet again and share new lunches in a warm atmosphere.”
