Initially planned to serve as the alternate venue for the full World Championship with Hawaii, Nice will console itself with organizing the Half Ironman. A high-level event praised by the big names in triathlon.

Drama in the world triathlon calendar: the city of Nice will ultimately not host the next full edition of the Ironman World Championship in 2026, as planned in rotation with Kona (Hawaii). Instead, the capital of the French Riviera will organize the World Ironman 70.3 Championships, equivalent to a Half Ironman, on September 12 and 13, 2026. The announcement was made this Tuesday by Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, on Wednesday, April 30.

A Significant Sporting Recognition

“This new edition of the 70.3 World Championship will further enhance our position as the capital of sport,” rejoiced the mayor. “After hosting the full Ironman in 2023, this extension confirms Nice’s ability to organize the largest international sporting events.” Present at the announcement, Scott DeRue, CEO of the Ironman group, didn’t hide his enthusiasm: “The 70.3 attracts the world elite of triathlon. These are Olympic medalists and world champions who will come to compete here, in an absolutely unique setting.”

The Ironman 70.3, also known as the “half,” includes 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling, and 21.1 km of running. It is shorter than the full format but just as challenging. The event will attract thousands of athletes from all over the world and will generate significant economic and tourism benefits for Nice and its surroundings.

Nice, a Historic Triathlon Site

Among the notable speakers, Daniela Ryf, ten-time triathlon world champion and winner here in Nice, praised the exceptional setting of the French Riviera: “Nice is a historic place for our sport. I won one of my most memorable titles here.” She also highlighted the specificity of the course: “What makes this race unique are the mountain sections. They are very demanding, but… at least you can enjoy the scenery!” she jokes.
