On Sunday, January 26th, Place Saint Roch in Nice will host the 36th World Championship of Palhasso Throwing. This event will mark the kick-off of the Nice Carnival 2025. The rendezvous is set for 3 PM for this competition, as festive as it is original, open to all.
The Palhasso Throwing finds its roots in an old Niçoise tradition. The Palhasso, a straw figurine, symbolizes the worries of the past year. Throwing it is a symbolic gesture of renewal and liberation. Participants form teams of two people and strive to throw the puppet as far as possible using a sheet.
Registration, which is free, will take place at the Place de l’église Saint Roch. Teams can represent real or imaginary countries. Four age categories are planned:
- Category 1: Nenons (0-5 years old)
- Category 2: Pichoi (6-11 years old)
- Category 3: Adòs (12-17 years old)
- Category 4: Madurs (18 years and over)
In parallel, a carnival mini-float is being created at the Nice Nautical Base, in collaboration with the children of the Marine World Discovery Center (CDMM). It will represent “Garibaldi in the middle of the oceans” and will be inaugurated on February 5th. This project aims to involve young people in artistic creation and to enrich the carnival festivities.
Records to be Broken
Since its inception, this sporting event is closely linked to the Carnav Independent de Sant Ròc. The performances of the teams are closely monitored. The current world record is 15.30 meters. It was set in 2007 by the team from the County of Nice “Lu Poetas,” consisting of Joan Piccinelli and Romieu Martin. Other records, in all categories, are also waiting to be broken.
Whether you are a participant or just a spectator, the Palhasso Throwing promises a convivial and symbolic moment. A great way to start the year on a festive and cheerful note.
