Fiona Ferro and Alizé Cornet are participating this week in the Lausanne tournament. However, the day was largely disrupted by rain.
Fiona Ferro opened the event today against her compatriot Diane Parry (20 years old, ranked 90th in the world). With two quarter-final qualifications (including a title in 2019) in her recent participations in the Swiss tournament, Ferro was rightly aiming for a good result. Especially since the last duel between the two players at the Contrexeville Challenger two weeks earlier had turned in favor of the Azuréenne.
In very challenging conditions, the competitors struggled to find their rhythm with their serves. The heavy clay court did not favor Fiona Ferro’s powerful play. The Valbonne native forced her shots and made a series of unforced errors. Luckily for her, the match was quickly interrupted at 2-1 for nearly 45 minutes. As they returned to the court, the sun reappeared, which was a boon for Ferro as she got back into the match. However, towards the end of the set, it was Diane Parry who pulled away to win the first set 7-5.
Spurred into action, Fiona Ferro responded in the second set. More solid with her first serve, the world number 257 made the difference after the first game. She even managed to break serve three times to win the set 6-2.
The third set was much closer. The two players exchanged service games until Fiona Ferro’s intensity waned at the end of the match after over 2 hours of play. She eventually lost (7-5 / 2-6 / 6-2).
Cornet will have to wait
Scheduled for the end of the day, the match between Alizé Cornet and Swiss player Viktorija Golubic (30 years old, ranked 117th in the world) is now expected to take place tomorrow. That is, if weather conditions permit. Since the beginning of the tournament, the organizers have had to contend with rain, wind, and hail. It is a far cry from the sunshine and average 32°C on the Côte d’Azur since the start of summer…
