The International Olympic Committee has decided to continue a focused and exclusive dialogue with the French bid, excluding those of Switzerland and Sweden.

Following the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympics, France is in pole position to host the Winter Olympics in 2030. Indeed, the International Olympic Committee announced on Wednesday, November 29, that it would select only one bid, that of the French Alps…

The Auvergne-Rhรดne-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d’Azur regions will host competitions spread across four locations, with biathlon in Haute-Savoie and ice sports in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). The famous ski resort “Isola 2000” will host the ski cross events.

โ€œIn the Nice Cรดte dโ€™Azur area, this project is hugeโ€

Philippe MANASSERO

These are the words of Philippe Manassero, president of the Departmental Olympic and Sports Committee 06: “First of all, congratulations to all the teams supporting this magnificent project for the Winter Olympics in the French Alps in 2030. In 5 months they managed a feat by securing this bid for a focused dialogue by the IOC, remaining the sole candidate. This is the first success of this bid. In the Nice Cรดte dโ€™Azur area, this project is huge, going well beyond the sports aspect, but also impacting the economic side with ice hockey and skating competitions, not to mention the closing ceremony which will attract thousands of supporters from around the world to Nice, the department, and the region.”

The fight against climate change sidelined?ย

The announcement of the organization of the 2030 Winter Olympics in the Alps, and partly in the Alpes-Maritimes, did not sit well with everyone. The “Citizens’ Assembly VIVA!” advocates for an approach that seems inconsistent with the future of the Maralpine territory:

At the opening of COP 28, everyone agrees that the fight against climate change must move from words to actions more than ever. And at this time, there is an urgent need to invest massively to combat the consequences of climate change in our department. Instead, the 2030 Olympics will siphon off these investments for the next 10-20 years. The constraints imposed by the International Olympic Committee on the venues lead to investments that are hardly consistent with the future of our territory, while at the same time, our city suffers from a critical lack of local sports facilities,โ€ exclaims VIVA! in a statement released during the day.
