Wednesday means cinema. Today we present our selection of films for the week, to help guide you in the dark theaters.
1. Hypnotic by Robert Rodriguez
Tormented by the disappearance of his daughter, Detective Danny Rourke tries to understand the circumstances of this tragedy. At the same time, he is investigating a series of unusual heists. These assaults of unprecedented violence could be related to the disappearance of his daughter. He will have to be more vigilant than ever because the enemy could be anyone. The criminals he is dealing with use hypnosis to create criminals out of innocent people.
2. Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet
Sandra, Samuel, and their visually impaired 11-year-old son Daniel have been living in an isolated chalet in the mountains for a year. An investigation for suspicious death is launched when Daniel finds him dead at the foot of their house in the snow. He appears to have fallen to the ground from the attic window. Murder, accident, or suicide? To solve the case, every detail of this family’s life will be scrutinized. The mother is designated as the main suspect. Their son, Daniel attends the trial which focuses on his parents’ tumultuous relationship. The film received the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
3. Retribution by Nimròd Antal
Matt Turner, a businessman working in Berlin, played by Liam Neeson, is in the car with his two children when he receives an anonymous call informing him that a bomb has been placed under his seat. If he stands up, his vehicle will explode. At the mercy of this unknown caller, he follows the instructions given to save himself and his family from a tragic fate. Retribution is a remake of the Spanish film Unknown Call, released in 2016.
4. The Last Voyage of the Demeter by André Øvredal
The Demeter, a commercial ship, leaves Romania heading towards London. On board, it carries a mysterious private cargo consisting of fifty wooden crates. The crossing does not go as planned, with bloody events unfolding on the ship. The crew tries to hunt down this presence that spreads terror each night. Upon arrival in England, the ship is no more than a wreck with no survivors. This film is a cinematic adaptation of the chapter The Captain’s Log from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, published in 1897. It is prohibited for those under 12 years.
5. The War of Gods – New Gods: Yang Jian by Ji Zhao
The War of Gods – New Gods: Yang Jian is the sequel to New Gods: Nezha Reborn. The second installment of the “New Gods” universe that reinvents classic Chinese mythology focuses on the quest of Yang Jian, a fallen god turned bounty hunter. His fate takes another turn when an enigmatic woman approaches him with a mission. To fulfill it, he must confront his past.
