It’s official: the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has voted in favor of the French Alps for the hosting of the 2030 Winter Games. France, and especially the city of Nice, will have the honor of hosting various sports disciplines. However, this comes with certain conditions.

In Nice, Mayor Christian Estrosi reacted: “It is an immense pride and an honor to host the 2030 Winter Olympic Games in our Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, in our Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur Region, and also in the Auvergne Rhône Alpes region. France will shine again after the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will begin on Friday ,” he stated in a press release.

He adds: “we will host the entire ice complex and the closing ceremony. The Allianz Riviera will transform into a temple of ice hockey, with two rinks and over 30,000 seats, and the Palais Nikaia will host curling. In total, Nice will have 75 hockey matches, 150 curling matches, 16 figure skating sessions, and 9 short-track events.”
Moreover, the Olympic village with 1,500 beds will be converted into student and social housing, and a new 5,000-seat ice rink for figure skating and short-track will permanently remain in the city of Nice.
Under certain conditions
However, Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, emphasized the conditions. Specifically, the presentation of financial guarantees by the State and also by the regions. This is to justify their ability to host these games. Regarding the financial aspect, this guarantee must be provided by October 1.
