In the context of the France-Israel cultural year in 2018, a collaboration was considered between the Nice Opera and the Tel Aviv Opera. In the second semester (likely in October or November), joint artistic collaborations and co-productions could be scheduled on the agendas of both cities.
This is the purpose of the visit and the outcome of the discussions between Hanna Munitz, General Director of the Israeli Opera, Michaรซl Ajzenstadt, Artistic Director of the Israeli Opera, and the political and cultural authorities of Nice, following the cooperative and friendly relations Nice maintains with Israel, also due to the influential presence of a Jewish community in the region.
The Israeli Opera is one of the institutions at the forefront of Israel’s cultural influence. The life of the Opera in pre-State Israel began in Tel Aviv on July 28, 1923, with Verdi’s “La Traviata.”
After a second beginning in 1945, the Israeli Opera was established in 1985 with Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas.” It gradually developed, with a significant milestone in 1994: the opening of a new 1,500-seat venue.
The Opera has gained international fame, striving to increase co-productions while also organizing, as much as possible, international tours.
Since 2010, every summer, the Israeli Opera organizes the Masada Festival, an exceptional and grand artistic event held at the foot of the Masada fortress in the heart of the Judean desert, attracting tens of thousands of spectators from around the world each year.
The musical direction is entrusted to Daniel Oren, whose international reputation is well-known among enthusiasts of “serious music.”
