A bit of history…
The Persian army, following the advice of Hippias, the former tyrant of Athens, landed in early September 490 on the approximately 4-kilometer beach bordering the Marathon plain, forty kilometers from Athens.
The Athenians do not wait for the enemy behind their walls but, led by the strategist Miltiades, about 10,000 Athenian and Plataean hoplites meet the Persians. On September 13th, the Persians decide to attack Athens by land and sea. According to some historians (disputed by Herodotus), this is when Pheidippides (or Philippides) supposedly ran the distance that would later become the marathon to warn Athens of the invasion before dying.
That being said, whether the story of Pheidippides is true or not, the athletic feat here is collective, with the forced march of the Athenian hoplites to prevent the Persian landing at Phalerum. Run against multiple sclerosis at the Alpes-Maritimes Marathon with “Solidaires en Peloton”.
The ARSEP Foundation once again joins the Alpes-Maritimes Marathon with Solidaires en Peloton, its sports brand.
Meet at the marathon village at the ARSEP Foundation booth, where lovely blue and pink jerseys will be on sale to
encourage solidarity runners and support research on Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
During the race and in the village, Annette Sergent, athlete and sponsor of Solidaires en Peloton, will also participate, wearing the
pink jersey: “together against multiple sclerosis”.
In the Alpes-Maritimes, nearly 4,000 people are affected by
Multiple Sclerosis. Since August 2010, several thousand
kilometers of solidarity have been covered. Thanks to thousands of participants across France, more than 80,000 โฌ
have been raised for the ARSEP Foundation.
This year, during the Alpes-Maritimes Marathon, the Roch les Mousquetaires Foundation will offer a 5,000-euro donation to research
and support Solidaires En Peloton.
