Nice celebrates independent cinema

Regard Indépendant is an association created in 1995, founded by Vincent Jourdan and Pascal Gaymard (amateur filmmakers and critics). Comprising authors, directors, technicians, as well as cinephiles and amateur enthusiasts, its mission is to support young creators in the Region. Strengthened by its exchanges with other structures, it offers a space for work, reflection, training, and distribution.

The eighth Rencontres Cinéma et Vidéo gives carte blanche to about ten films every year. It is a place for meetings and exchanges, where the general public can discover lesser-known styles. The festival will open at the Cinémathèque de Nice with “L’argent fait le bonheur” (1993) by Robert Guédiguian (“The Walk of the Champ de Mars”). In the impoverished suburbs of Marseille, some mothers come together to fight against poverty. “We chose this film,” explains Vincent Jourdan, “because its theme is more relevant than ever.” Lastly, the Trimages Theater will screen “Tout tremble” by Bernard Boespflug, a film about union activism. Initially made as a short film, it eventually became a feature-length film. This project benefits from development support from the PACA Region.

This year, the focus is on creators who claim their independence of spirit while relying on new technologies to make themselves known. Film détournements, minimalist images… these are the iconoclasts of the Net. They include Charlie Mars, Joe la Mouk, Kansas, and Mozinor. Joe la Mouk is composed of three people from Nice, who are regularly broadcast on Canal Plus. Among their various activities is the détournement of TV shows, a technique they have mastered perfectly.

The second highlight of the festival will be the screening of Super8 format video. It is a type of film stock with smaller perforations than classic film stock, allowing for a larger print area. To discover this format, several films are offered. Starting with the series “Documents Interdits,” followed by “straight-shot” films from Straight8, and the work of filmmaker Louis Dupont. No fewer than six films by him are scheduled. An enthusiast of this challenging format, he is the author of a series of Super8 videos.

For the occasion, the Atelier du Film Court from Caen is invited to present a selection of short films by Norman filmmakers. The schools and associations of the Côte d’Azur also present various works, which will lead to meetings with the authors.
