The Vow Festival in Nice
For a long time, people were helpless in the face of the scourge of epidemics. They indeed provoked contradictory reactions, from collective hysteria to the emergence of new fraternities, embodied by the Penitents’ confraternities.
The last epidemic that left a mark in the collective memory of Nice is recorded negatively: it was cholera, which in 1832, threatened Nice and was averted by what was understood at the time as the conjunction of divine intercession and human medicine.
This fear left a magnificent reminder in stone, the Church of the Vow, and a tradition, the solemn procession.
