It was a tough weekend for Nice clubs and athletes, marked by the elimination of Stade Niรงois in the round of 16 and the defeat of the Nice water polo players. However, Alizรฉ Cornet delivered a top-notch performance and Fabio Quartararo came close to his first victory.
Motorcycle Racing: Fabio Quartararo finishes 4th at Jerez
The young 16-year-old rider from Nice had an impressive race on the Andalusian circuit of Jerez, leading several times. But two small mistakes on the last lap prevented Quartararo from finishing on the podium. Ultimately, he finished fourth. On Saturday, the protรฉgรฉ of the Estrella Galicia team had secured the first pole position of his young career. After four races, Fabio Quartararo is third in the overall standings. The next race is in two weeks at Le Mans.
Tennis: Alizรฉ Cornet defeats world number 2
After struggling for a few weeks, the Nice tennis player made a significant impact in the first round of the Madrid tournament. Alizรฉ Cornet, far from being the favorite, defeated Romanian Simona Halep, the world number two, in two sets 7/6 6/3. In the next round, she will face Italian Roberta Vinci. On her preferred surface, Cornet is finding her smile and form again, which is a good omen before Roland-Garros, from May 24 to June 7.
Rugby: End of the road for Stade Niรงois
Faced with a monumental challenge, Stade Niรงois failed to qualify for the round of 16. Gilbert Doucet’s team was defeated 18-13 on Rumilly’s turf and will not see Fรฉdรฉrale 1 this season. The Niรงois can harbor regrets from the first leg where they came close to victory with a bonus point, a result that would have allowed them to face neighbors Grasse next week. Overall, for a newly promoted team, the season remains excellent. See you next September for a second season in Fรฉdรฉrale 2, this time with the label of favorites.
Water Polo: Niรงois defeated, finishing 3rd in the regular season
The ONN water polo players lost 9-3 in Strasbourg and gave up second place to Montpellier, whom they will meet again on Wednesday evening at Jean-Bouin for the first leg of the semifinal. Considering the long-term injuries of some key players, it’s a successful season from Samuel Nardon’s team. In the first leg, Montpellier won 11-10, while Nice got their revenge 12-7 in the return match. Suffice to say, the double confrontation will be very close once again.
