Christian Estrosi and the Dechauffour family commemorated the ten-year anniversary of the Nairobi attack at Castle Hill.
On September 21, 2013, two women from Nice were killed in an attack in front of the Westgate store in Nairobi, Kenya. It was a terrible tragedy for the family, who were present today to honor the memory of Corine and Anne Dechauffour.
During this very emotional ceremony, Corine’s husband, Michel Dechauffour, spoke to remember how important Corine and Anne were in his life: “For me, it is impossible to forgive the terrorists for having taken two such precious souls from me, transforming my life into yet another nostalgia. I think of our entire family who suffered this inconceivable shock on September 21, 2013.”
Next, the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, spoke. He recalled how deeply the people of Nice had been affected by attacks in recent years. He acknowledged the installation of the commemorative plaque for Corine and Anne seven years ago, on September 21, 2016.
The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths by the family, the region, the department, and the city. A moment of silence was observed. The municipal band paid tribute to those who died and to the victims of the attacks.
Finally, during his speech, Christian Estrosi quoted Simone Veil to support the family during these difficult times: “There are two ways to emerge from this tragedy. Either you do as I did, and you get through it at seventeen. But you spend your life consumed by hatred. Or you draw strength from it to carry a flame of hope.”
