Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor of Nice and President of the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur, today unveils the program of events organized by the City of Nice to commemorate the Centenary of the 14-18 war.
For Nice, the people of Nice, the mountain dwellers, Italian immigrants, and wintering communities, 1914 is not synonymous with destruction and battles but with a change of the world. Extending the legal act of 1860, the war is first and foremost the definitive sign of the integration of the County of Nice into France, through the blood shed by the 5,000 people of Nice and mountain dwellers who fell for France.
It is also the moment when, beyond the cruelty of combat, many realities collapse: that of luxury winter tourism, from an economic standpoint, or that of mountain rurality, from a societal standpoint. It is finally a time when, in addition to the national events, specific episodes related to the historical particularity of our city and its territory must be remembered.
That is why the city of Nice will give a strong resonance to this celebration, organizing throughout the period 2014-2018, and at the pace of official commemorations, with particularly important moments complementing the national calendar, patriotic ceremonies, cultural operations, and moments of collective remembrance.
