The myth he created during his lifetime and which survived him after his death is also well known. However, how could this hero of the Two Worlds assume his triple mission as a Niçoise condottiere, a fervent defender of popular Risorgimento, a republican and revolutionary, and a loyalist to the monarchy of Savoy at the same time?
How did Garibaldi overcome all his contradictions, between the particular and the general, between the sense of history and factual chance, between heroization for some and imposture for others, without renouncing any, by simultaneously undertaking commitments that sometimes lacked coherence and intelligence in the eyes of his contemporaries?
