Just two weeks ago, the metropolis of Nice announced that it would host four ultra trail races from September 22 to 25, 2022, in collaboration with UTMB (Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc).
The UTMB World Series Events bring together some of the best trail running events and take place all around the globe.
The UTMB World Series Events are the only races where runners can start their quest towards the UTMB World Series Finals in Chamonix. They are also the only events where runners can collect “Running Stones” — one running stone corresponds to a chance to be drawn to participate in the UTMB Mont-Blanc race starting in 2023. It should be noted that only one running stone is needed to be drawn.
The events
100M
The 100 miles (159 km) will start from Auron before reaching the highest point at over 2,650m altitude, Rabuons. The course will traverse, among others, the chestnut forests of the Tinée, the Mercantour massif, Mount Alban, Mount Boron, before finishing by the sea on the Promenade des Anglais.
The most challenging course, it will award 4 running stones to the brave who complete this 100 miles.
100k
This 100 km (actually 108) will start from Roubion, then follow the Vignols track for a few kilometers before joining the 100 miles route and also ending on the Promenade des Anglais.
For this race, 3 running stones are up for grabs.
50k
During this 58km course starting from Menton, runners will begin with a kilometer towards the Col du Berceau, before passing through the village of Sainte-Agnès and finally reaching the summit of Baudon. They will then pass by the Fort de la Revère and Mount Bataille before joining the sea and finishing on the Promenade des Anglais.
Here, two running stones will be awarded.
20k
For this race, the most accessible of the event, athletes will start from Villefranche-sur-Mer before circling Cap Ferrat via the coastal path. They will then pass through Col 4 Chemins before climbing the hill of the castle to finish on the Promenade des Anglais.
This shorter course still awards one running stone.
